The Story of Lucinda Sly by renowned Irish language author, Maidhc Dainín Ó Sé is based on events that took place in Carlow in 1834 and 1835. The novel tells the story of Lucinda Singleton, a widow who married a well-to-do farmer named Walter Sly. Suffering at the hands of her abusive husband - a drunkard and a brute - she conspires with her lover, John Dempsey, to murder him. Capturing the sentiment in Carlow at that time, the lovers were hanged side by side in public outside Carlow Gaol on 30 March, 1835. The Story of Lucinda Sly was an award winner at Oireachtas na Gaeilge, 2008.

L'autore:
Maidhc Dainín Ó Sé (Mike Daneen O Shea) is the legendary Irish musician and author who was born in the Kerry Gaeltacht in 1942, before leaving for England at fifteen...unbeknownst to his parents. There, he worked in factories and on building sites in London where he divided his time between hard labour and hard dancing in the Irish dance halls! His book A Thig ná Tit Orm (House Don't Fall On Me) has been described akin to Maurice O Sullivan's Twenty Years a-Growing (Oxford University Press). He returned to Ireland, via America, in 1969.

Gabriel Fitzmaurice is author of more than fifty books, including two books of poetry published by Cornwall's Peterloo Poets. He has also had poems published in The Spectator, and The Tablet. He has been described as the best contemporary, traditional, popular poet in English in Booklist (U.S), a wonderful poet in the Guardian, one of Ireland s leading poets in Books Ireland, Ireland's favourite poet for children in Best Books! and the Irish A.A. Milne by Declan Kiberd in the Sunday Tribune.
