There are few topics more awe-inspiring than cosmology. What is the universe? How does it work? Where did it come from? These fundamental questions intrigue adults and children alike. This accessible guide brings alive humanity s attempts to explain the existence of everything and explores the latest and best theories on how the universe came into being. With approachable text, assuming no previous knowledge, and uniquely in such an illustrated book, the reader is taken beyond the certainties to explore the strange concepts that fill modern cosmology. Is the universe a hologram? Is everything we know part of a membrane floating in multidimensional space? Could we be living in a computer simulation? It sounds like science fiction, but these are among the ideas cosmologists seriously propose for the nature of reality. This book is for students, amateur astronomers, and anyone who has looked up at the sky and wondered about our place in the universe.

Recensione:
The wonders of cosmology are laid bare in this concise, well illustrated and informative book. Cosmology is about looking at the universe as a unified whole. It's a pretty big subject and this is a great introduction to it. The author digs in from the very beginning to explain how our concept of the cosmos relied on our belief in the gods. This view steadily changed as we began to get better at seeing our universe for what it really is,until eventually we started exploring the planets themselves with rockets and space probes. from star formations to an inside view of Cern's large Hadron Collider. If this book doesn't make you want to rush out and buy a telescope... well then, you must already have one. Clegg examines the origin of the universe and offers a clear explanation of the big bang theory. The pictures are amazing, from star formations to an inside view of Cern's large Hadron Collider. If this book doesn't make you want to rush out and buy a telescope... well then, you must already have one. Flipside says: Superb science book covering life, the universe and a whole lot more. FlipSide This is a beautifully illustrated book covering basic understanding of the nature of stars and how planets are formed through to such concepts as theories of how the universe came into being. Overall much of the book may contain some very basic facts but it does go on to extend our knowledge to more complex matters in the final chapters and this, along with beautifully clear illustrations, makes it a good read. --The Astronomer
