Giovanni Verga(1840-1922) is generally considered to be Italy's greatest novelist. He is best known for his 2 major novels, I Malavoglia (The House by the Medlar Tree) and Mastro Don Gesualdo and his short stories. His play Cavalleria Rusticana was turned into an opera by Mascagni. All of his major work is available in translation from Dedalus.
