'This is a quirky, gripping and, above all, witty fantasy novel, narrated at considerable pace, with subversive elements in the story that make for even more compelling reading. Sebastian is both perpetrator and narrator of the story. Although he is deeply troubled and manipulative, the dialogues this would-be Fritzl has with Christine, the devoted vegan Elli, his sanctimonious brother Uwe, the bully from his school days, Ingo, and with several other characters in the book, are conveyed through smart, satirical, sometimes hilarious passages almost as if, perversely, the writer is trying to evoke empathy for him. The tone of the book oscillates between light and dark, leaping from cynicism to farce to grotesque. The language can be blunt, graphic and harrowing. L'autore

Born in Hamburg in 1961, Karen Duve is one of Germany's leading contemporary writers. She has won eight literary prizes, the latest being the Kassel Literature Prize for Grotesque Humour, for which The Prepper Room provided much of the evidence. While working on her book Anständig essen [eating responsibly], in which she tried out a number of ethically based forms of eating, she became a committed vegetarian and a well-known figure on German television arguing, for example, with representatives of the agricultural industry. As well as polemics, short stories and children's books, she has written five novels; one of which, Taxi, been made into a film. The Prepper Room is her most recent novel.
