Die Jungs verbünden sich mit Johanns Schwester Katharina, halten die Sendungen schriftlich fest und verteilen heimlich Flugblätter in ihrer Stadt – ein Akt des Hochverrats, für den ihnen Haft oder Schlimmeres droht.
Während der Krieg andauert, vertieft sich Emils Zuneigung zu Katharina. Er würde alles tun, um ein normales Leben zu führen und mit ihr in Passau bleiben zu können. Doch als die deutschen Verluste riesige Ausmaße annehmen, kann auch ihr größter Widerstand die Jungen nicht davor bewahren, an die Ostfront geschickt zu werden.
Emil hofft für Katharinas Wohl und das seiner Familie, dass er die Schlacht überlebt, denn er weiß, dass sie den Krieg bereits verloren haben.
