Born in Shanghai, China, the child of third generation missionaries, Esther and her family were driven out of China in 1950 and spent several years on a farm in Canada before moving to the United States in 1957. As a teenager she became a naturalized U.S. citizen. She attended Geneva College in western Pennsylvania and graduated with a B.A. in English in 1968. Following graduation she married and began a teaching career that spanned thirty years. A love of adventure sent Esther and her husband, Alex, to Wyoming in 1970 where they settled and raised a family. They quickly grew to love the wide open spaces and take yearly horse pack trips to the mountains and wilderness areas of Wyoming.
