This is a book for children with anxiety. High levels of stress and anxiety related to social situations, problems of emotional regulation and sensory issues are common in children who live with anxiety related disorders. High levels of stress can lead to a break down in cognitive functioning impacting a child's ability to learn from teaching, make good decisions and even form meaningful relationships. More than any other childhood issue, a loss of emotional control can lead to the need for a restrictive special education programming. Even for children who are able to attend inclusive classrooms, peers might avoid or fear a child whose behavior is unpredictably scary or even violent. The objective of this book is to teach highly anxious children how to relax their bodies and control their emotions.When My Worries Get Too Big is based on cognitive behavioral management and psycho-education, both of which are approaches to behavior management that focus on teaching children to recognize their own feelings of anxiety and then teaching them strategies to help them control those feelings. This second edition includes several additional strategies that parents and teachers can use to support children with anxiety. The strategies are inline with the evidence-based practice of self-management as well as offering visual and interactive structure to support children who lack executive functioning skills.

Kari Dunn Buron taught with students on the autism spectrum in K-12 for 30+ years and was a founding member of the Minnesota Autism Project. She developed an Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate program for educators at Hamline University in St. Paul, MN, and has done volunteer work specific to autism in Trinidad, Tobago, Barbados, Tanzania, and Ghana. In 2003, Kari received a self-designed Bush Leadership Fellowship that allowed her to spend a year interviewing and working internationally with scientists and researchers in the area of social cognition, education, and autism with a focus on challenging behaviors. In 2012, Kari was inducted into the Illinois State University Education Department Hall of Fame.Kari is the co-author of The Incredible 5-Point Scale, and the author of A “5” Could Make Me Lose Control and A 5 is Against the Law! (2008 ASA Literary Award Winner). She is also the co-editor of a textbook for educators entitled Learners on the Autism Spectrum: Preparing Highly Qualified Educators (2009 ASA Literary Award Winner) and a co-author of Social Behavior and Self-Management (a scale book for adults). Kari's most recent release is a children's chapter book entitled Adalyn's Clare, a story about a highly anxious fourth grader and her social therapy dog, Clare.
