Agota Kristof est née en Hongrie, d'où elle s'est enfuie en 1956. Installée depuis lors à Neufchâtel, en Suisse, elle écrit d'abord des pièces de théâtre, avant de commencer sa trilogie romanesque directement en français, la langue de son exil. Le Grand Cahier en est le premier volet, suivi de La Preuve et Le Troisième mensonge, prix du Livre Inter 1992.
