Né en 1843 à New York, non loin de Washington Square, Henry James effectue de longs séjours en Europe avant de quitter définitivement les États-Unis, à l'âge de trente-deux ans, pour s'installer à Londres où il mourra en 1916.
Les conflits de points de vue entre l'Ancien et le Nouveau Monde lui inspirent le thème " cosmopolite " de ses premiers romans : L'Américain, Daisy Miller, Les Bostoniens, mais son art de romancier atteindra sa véritable mesure avec les chefs-d'œuvre de la maturité, dont notamment Ce que savait Maisie (1879), Les Ailes de la colombe (1902) ou Les Ambassadeurs (1903). Écrivain de l'introspection, ami de Flaubert, Maupassant et Tourgueniev, Henry James est considéré comme l'un des précurseurs du roman moderne.
