The contributions to this book explore recent internal developments within Cognitive Linguistics from the point of view of its interdisciplinary nature. The book makes relevant connections between CL and other approaches to language, especially, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, pragmatics, and discourse studies. The contributorsinvestigate areas of convergence between these approaches and the cognitive paradigm, and place emphasis on the nature of possible developments, if such connections are taken into account. The book addresses such issues as the relationship between the embodied nature of language, cultural models, and social action and the role of cognitive models in inferential activity and in discourse.

"In essence, this is a very well-articulated, coherent volume which undoubtedly constitutesa very solid contribution to the field of CL. Moreover, one of its most attractive features is its pursuit of interdisciplinary connections providing a profound and illuminating overview of the whole framework of CL and its connections with neighboring disciplines and subdisciplines. [...] the present volume must be considered exemplary."
Ricardo Mairal in: Intercultural Pragmatics 1/2007
"All in all, this is an impressive, ''must read'' volume that would be appealing to anyone interested in the exploration of fields as varied as theoretical linguistics, cognition, discourse studies, psychology, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, which makes the volume particularly attractive to those scholars from different persuasions who are interested in the relevant connection between CL and other theoretical frameworks. It represents a successful effort at multi-disciplinarity and offers, in a complementary fashion, a rich overview of the many threads of discussion on core issues of the current debate in Linguistics. This book is an excellent contribution in terms of the multiple explanatory ways and eclectic variety of perspectives it takes to shed light upon the panoramic state-of-the-art account of research in Cognitive Linguistics, which, to put it with the editors, is ''as strong as its foundations, as wide as its scope''. This book is a goldmine."

Descrizione libro Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The book testifies of the great tolerance of Cognitive Linguists towards internal variety within itself and towards external interaction with major linguistic subdisciplines. Internally, it opens up the broad variety of CL strands and the cognitive unity between convergent linguistic disciplines. Externally, it provides a wide overview of the connections between cognition and social, psychological, pragmatic, and discourse-oriented dimensions of language, which will make this book attractive to scholars from different persuasions. The book is thus expected to raise productive debate inside and outside the CL community. Furthermore, the book examines interdisciplinary connections from the point of view of the internal dynamics of CL research itself. CL is rapidly developing into different compatible frameworks with extensions into levels of linguistics description like discourse, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics among others that have only recently been taken into account in this orientation. The book covers two general topics: (i) the relationship between the embodied nature of language, cultural models, and social action; (ii) the role of metaphor and metonymy in inferential activity and as generators of discourse ties. More specific topics are the nature and scope of constructional meaning, language variation and cultural models; discourse acts; the relationship between communication and cognition, the argumentative role of metaphor in discourse, the role of mental spaces in linguistic processing, and the role of empirical work in CL research. These features endow the book with internal unity and consistency while preserving the identity of each of the contributions therein. 444 pp. Englisch. Codice articolo 9783110186178
