Das Transformationskonzept wurde bisher nahezu ausschließlich von den Akteuren und ihren Intentionen her gedacht, die als Ausgangspunkt und Grundlage historischen Sinns und möglicher Ordnungen des Wandels angesehen wurden. Demgegenüber wurden Zufälle lediglich als Symptome eines mangelnden Wissens verstanden, denen ein eigenständiges Handlungspotenzial nicht zukommt. Im Gegensatz dazu wird in dem Band erkundet, - ob und in welcher Weise Transformationen von Zufallsfunden, unbeabsichtigten Nebenfolgen oder überraschenden Wendungen bestimmt sind, -welchen Transformationen die contingentia selbst unterliegt, die in ihrer Verbildlichung (als Tyche, Fortuna u. a.), aber auch in ihrer historischen Semantik in Theologie und Philosophie seit der Antike bis in die jüngste Gegenwart bemerkenswerten Veränderungen unterlag, -welcher spezifische Umgang mit Kontingenz in sozialen und politischen Prozessen, aber auch in Literatur und Kunst zu beobachten ist. Von besonderem Interesse ist dabei die Unterscheidung von Risiko und Gefahr (Luhmann).
