Various groups lay claim today to the central site of old Berlin, that on which the city palace of the Prussian Kings and the German Emperors stood. Some want to build a historical copy of the palace while others, such as the Foreign Minister, wish to see a new building with a functional orientation. For others still 'To keep or to demolish the Palast des Republik' is a question of dogma. An exhibit entitled 'The Palace?' will take place 100 days long at the site of the former city palace starting July 1, 1993 and will set signs for Berlin's way into the next century. A group of selected architects, among them David Chipperfield, Josef Paul Kleihues, Hans Kollhoff, Jose Luis Mateo and Axel Schultes, will present their contributions for discussion on the reconstruction of the city palace and on the new shape of Berlin's old historical center. The exhibit and this book, however, deal also with the context of the history, the architecture, the demolition and the possible perspectives for the reconstruction of the city palace. The book is recommended not only to exhibit visitors but also to anyone who is interested in the heated debate on this subject.
