Philipp Meyer, geboren 1974, stammt aus einer Künstlerfamilie, verließ vorzeitig die Schule und hielt sich mit diversen Jobs – unter anderem als Fahrradmechaniker – über Wasser. Mit 20 entschloss er sich zu einem Literaturstudium und schaffte die Aufnahmeprüfung an der Cornell University. Nach seinem Abschluss arbeitete er als Broker an der Wall Street, um seine Schulden zu bezahlen. In dieser Zeit begann er zu schreiben. Ein Stipendium ermöglichte ihm einen Aufenthalt an der University of Texas, wo er seinen ersten Roman „American Rust“ (dt. "Rost") begann. Das Buch gewann den Los Angeles Times Book Prize, war das Washington Post Book of the Year, schaffte es auf diverse Bestsellerlisten und wurde in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt. Philipp Meyer gilt seither als einer der hoffnungsvollsten amerikanischen Nachwuchsautoren. An „Der erste Sohn“ arbeitete er über fünf Jahre. Zur Zeit ist er ein Guggenheim Fellow und lebt in Austin, Texas und New York.
