In Ägypten war dieser Roman über das abenteuerliche Leben eines frühchristlichen Mönchs sofort nach seinem Erscheinen ein Bestseller. Youssef Ziedans Buch ist ein großes historisches Epos und zugleich ein Plädoyer für eine undogmatische, lebensbejahende Religiosität, das große Kontroversen auslöste – die Koptische Orthodoxe Kirche forderte (vergeblich) ein Verbot des Buches, muslimische Scheichs protestierten gegen den Autor.

Youssef Ziedan wurde 1958 geboren und ist Professor für Islamische Philosophie mit Schwerpunkt Sufismus. Außerdem war er Direktor der Handschriftenabteilung der Bibliothek von Alexandria. Neben zahlreichen wissenschaftlichen Publikationen hat Youssef Ziedan mehrere Romane veröffentlicht. „Azazel“ erschien in elf Sprachen und wurde 2009 mit dem Internationalen Preis für Arabische Literatur, auch arabischer Booker-Preis genannt, ausgezeichnet.
