L'autore:
Gudrun Pausewang wurde 1928 als das älteste von sechs Kindern in Wichstadtl (Ostböhmen) geboren. Ihr Vater kam 1943 in Russland um und ihre Mutter musste nach Kriegsende allein mit den sechs Kindern in den Westen fliehen. Gudrun Pausewang arbeitete als Lehrerin an verschiedenen Schulen in Deutschland und Mittel- und Südamerika. So lehrte sie in Chile, Venezuela und Kolumbien. 1972, zwei Jahre nach der Geburt ihres Sohnes, kehrte sie endgültig nach Deutschland zurück. Hier unterrichtete sie bis 1989 an einer hessischen Grundschule. Im Ruhestand beendete sie ihr Germanistikstudium und promovierte 1998 an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt/Main. Gudrun Pausewang ist seit 1958 schriftstellerisch tätig. Sie hat - neben Romanen für Erwachsene - zahlreiche Kinder- und Jugendbücher veröffentlicht, in denen sich ihre eigenen Erfahrungen und die Betroffenheit über die Armut in Südamerika, das Schicksal von Flüchtlingen und über die atomare Bedrohung niederschlagen. Sie engagiert sich in ihren Büchern für den Frieden, die Umwelt und soziale Gerechtigkeit. Ein wichtiges Thema ist auch die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Nationalsozialismus und dem Dritten Reich. Ihr Bücher wurden in 25 Sprachen übersetzt. Für ihr literarisches Werk wurde sie mehrfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit dem Deutschen Jugendliteraturpreis 1988 für "Die Wolke". 1999 erhielt sie das Bundesverdienstkreuz und 2009 bekam sie den Großen Preis der Deutschen Akademie für Kinder- und Jugendliteratur Volkach für ihr Lebenswerk. 2017 verlieh ihr der Arbeitskreis für Jugendliteratur für ihr literarisches Gesamtwerk den Sonderpreis des Deutschen Jugendliteraturpreises 2017. Dies ist die größte Auszeichung, die in der deutschensprachigen Kinder- und Jugendbuchszene verliehen wird.
