Mitten in der Nacht wird der sechzehnjährige Connor entführt und in ein Auto gezerrt. Es stellt sich schnell heraus, dass diese Aktion von seinen Eltern in Auftrag gegeben worden ist, um ihn, den unangepassten Jugendlichen, gegen seinen Willen in ein Boot Camp zu verfrachten.
Da Connor eine Beziehung zu einer zehn Jahre älteren Frau führt und das nicht den Vorstellungen seiner Eltern entspricht, haben sie ihn für viel Geld in „Lake Harmony“, einem Umerziehungslager für schwer erziehbare Teenager, angemeldet. Dort soll er auf den vermeintlich richtigen Weg geführt werden.
Connor erwartet im Boot Camp die Hölle. Körperliche Züchtigung, Isolierstation und verbale Demütigungen gehören zum Alltag. Schließlich findet Connor in Pauly und Sarah zwei Gleichgesinnte und gemeinsam gelingt es ihnen, aus dem Boot Camp zu fliehen. Doch zwei Aufseher sind den Freunden dicht auf den Fersen. Und plötzlich steht Connor vor einer schweren Entscheidung ...
L'autore
Morton Rhue, der eigentlich Todd Strasser heißt, wurde am 5. Mai 1950 auf Long Island, New York, geboren und wuchs auch dort auf. Als junger Mann reiste er durch die USA und Europa und verdiente sich sein Geld z. B. als Schiffssteward und Straßenmusiker. Nach dem Studium arbeitete er einige Jahre als Zeitungsreporter und Werbetexter. Schließlich entschloss sich Morton Rhue dazu, das Schreiben von Büchern zu seinem Hauptberuf zu machen. Seitdem hat er eine große Anzahl von Romanen und Kurzgeschichten verfasst - in Amerika gehört er zu den bekanntesten Kinder- und Jugendbuchautoren. Sein in Deutschland berühmtestes Buch ist "Die Welle", das seit Jahrzehnten zur Schullektüre gehört und das vielfach ausgezeichnet wurde. Morton Rhue lebt nach wie vor in New York. Seine Hobbys sind Angeln, Skifahren und Surfen. Über seine Bücher sagt er: "Gute Jugendliteratur soll dem Leser helfen richtige Entscheidungen zu treffen."
