Bella Chagall wurde 1895 in Witebsk als jüngstes von sieben Kindern einer wohlhabenden Kaufmannsfamilie geboren. In Moskau erwarb sie 1914 das Diplom für Literaturwissenschaften. Schon während ihres Studiums war sie auch am Theater tätig und setzte diese Laufbahn bis 1920 fort. In Witebsk war sie Marc Chagall bereits 1909 begegnet. In diesem Jahr porträtierte er sie als «Die Braut mit den schwarzen Handschuhen». Von einem vierjährigen Arbeitsaufenthalt in Paris zurückgekehrt, schloß Marc Chagall 1915 mit Bella in Witebsk die Ehe, die für beide zu einer unvergleichbaren Lebens- und Geistesgemeinschaft wurde. Von 1922 an lebten sie in Paris. Als sie 1935 zu den Stätten ihrer Herkunft reisten, fanden sie dort mit Erschrecken den Antisemitismus wieder vor, den sie aus ihrer Jugend kannten und längst überwunden geglaubt hatten. Nach dieser «Rückkehr in die Vergangenheit» begann Bella Chagall zu schreiben, in der Sprache ihrer Kindheit, auf jiddisch. Bella Chagal starb 1944.
