Budapest 1937 : Ein Pianist spielt das «Lied vom traurigen Sonntag» jeden Abend für die Gäste des jüdischen Gastronoms Szabo. Der Geschäftsreisende Wieck, ein Stammgast im Restaurant, liebt die Melodie, die unter dem Titel "Gloomy Sunday" weltberühmt wird. Doch dann bricht der Krieg aus, Wieck ist inzwischen SS-Brigadeführer, und freundschaftliche Verbindungen haben keinen Wert mehr.
