Since I began reading modern Bengali poetry years ago, I discovered that I was gradually responding more to Bishnu Dey than to others. This does not mean that I regarded him as a better poet than Jibanananda Das, I only found him more challenging and satisfying. The other major figures - Sudhindranath Datta, Buddhadev Bose and Amiya Chakravarti - I feel, if a comprehensive estimate is called for, as poets stand behind them. What did I find so appealing in Bishnu Dey's poetry, almost two decades ago ? In spite of the fact that I failed to understand him often and had to depend on dictionaries and handbooks on mythology to grasp the content. If I recollect clearly, his political belief and Weltanschauung - Marxism - found in me a ready adherent. Because, at that time, I was also a convinced Marxist of the middleclass Bengali type with all its limitations and positives and my lack of engagement in actual political struggle I tried to compensate by enriching my mind. I thought of redemption, rather dreamt of it, and its sustained as well as firm, sensitive depiction I read in Bishnu Dey's poetry. He articulated my vision and we came together."
