Andrej Bitow, 1937 in Leningrad geboren, studierter Geologe, veröffentlichte seit 1959 Erzählungen, Essays, Romane, Reiseberichte.
1990 erhielt er den russischen Puschkin-Preis. Mit dem Roman Das Puschkinhaus ist er 1978 (dt. 1983) weltweit bekannt geworden. In deutscher Sprache erschienen darüber hinaus Das Licht der Toten (1990), Mensch in Landschaft (1994), Puschkins Hase (Insel Verlag 1999) und Armenische Lektionen (Suhrkamp Verlag 2002). Bitow lebt heute in Moskau und St. Petersburg.
