Abbie und Chris sind ein ungleiches Paar und doch so glücklich wie zu Beginn: Chris kommt von ganz unten, Abbie aus einer mächtigen Südstaaten-Dynastie. Von Abbies Vater und bald auch den Medien und der Polizei verfolgt, rudern sie den Fluss hinunter. Es wird die Reise ihres Lebens, das sie in all seiner Schönheit und Bitterkeit noch einmal auskosten. Und sie wissen: Wo der Fluss endet, beginnt die Ewigkeit.
