Jared Diamond, 1937 in Boston geboren, ist Professor für Physiologie an der Universität von Kalifornien in Los Angeles. Sein Hauptforschungsgebiet ist die Evolutionsbiologie. In den letzten 25 Jahren hat er rund ein Dutzend Expeditionen in entlegene Gebiete von Neuguinea geleitet. Für seine Arbeit auf den Gebieten der Anthropologie und Genetik ist er mehrfach ausgezeichnet worden, u.a. mit dem Pulitzer-Preis. Nach ›Der dritte Schimpanse‹ und ›Arm und Reich‹ hat er zuletzt bei S. Fischer den Bestseller ›Kollaps. Warum Gesellschaften überleben oder untergehen‹ veröffentlicht.
