Sinossi
Eine Gruppe englischer Schuljungen gerät infolge eines Flugzeugunfalls auf eine unbewohnte Insel im Pazifischen Ozean. Kein Erwachsener überlebt. Zunächst erscheint der Verlust zivilisatorischer Ordnungsprinzipien leicht zu bewältigen: auf der Insel gibt es Wasser, Früchte, sogar wilde Schweine, die erlegt werden können. Ralph läßt Hütten bauen, erkundet die Insel, richtet einen Wachdienst für das Signalfeuer ein. Der gute Anfang aber führt in eine Krise, die bald diabolische Formen annimmt. Aus der Jagd wird blutiges Schlachten - die Jäger und die Hüter des Feuers geraten in einen Kampf auf Leben und Tod. Die Gemeinschaft zerfällt, Terror und barbarische Primitivität gipfeln im Machtrausch, der auch Mord nicht ausschließt. Das Beängstigende an diesem Gleichnis menschlicher Gesellschaft ist die Tatsache, daß diese Jungen keineswegs Monstren oder Verbrecher sind. Jeder von ihnen ist in irgendeiner Jungenklasse der Welt zu finden.

L'autore
William Golding, geboren 1911 in Colum Minor, Cornwall, studierte in Oxford. Er war Lehrer, im Krieg Marineoffizier. Längere Zeit lebte er in den USA. Mit ›Herr der Fliegen‹ erregte er weltweit großes Aufsehen. Golding wurde mit dem Man Booker Prize (1980) und dem Nobelpreis für Literatur (1983) ausgezeichnet. Er starb im Juni 1993 in Cornwall.
