In recent years, extensive studies of manyinteresting aspects of online community dynamicspromoted a better understanding of this area. One ofthe most challenging problems facing builders ofonline communities is the design of incentivemechanisms that can ensure user participation. However, running online community experiments in thereal world is expensive, and requires a great deal ofmotivation from users. In this thesis two major approaches are explored:system dynamics modeling and agent-based modeling, tosimulate the overall behaviours of participants inonline communities. Although these models aredeveloped by using two different methodologies, bothof them can provide insights into the user motivationprocess, incentive mechanism evaluation and communitydevelopment. The target online community for my studyis called Comtella, which is used in several seniorComputer Science classes in the Department ofComputer Science, University of Saskatchewan.Simulation models for the Comtella online communityhave been developed and the simulation results areuseful to provide future directions for incentivemechanism improvement.
