In a globalised society English has emerged as the international lingua franca. China is no exception, yet the place and usage of English in China is a unique case. In this book, the authors examine the reasons behind this: the influence of the Chinese language on English, resulting in Chinese English and Chinglish; the influence of Chinese culture; and the difficulties that often arise in communication, including mistakes, mistranslation, etc. Examples of common errors are provided along with a linguistic analysis of how they occur. The authors discuss the implications for English language teaching in China and arrive at the conclusion that such a hybrid variety of English is a cultural phenomenon which is unlikely to disappear.

Mitchell is senior lecturer and deputy dean for international affairs at TSU's Faculty of Foreign Languages, where he teaches English, translation, and the history of English literature.
