Gustav Klimt's landscape paintings bring to light a lesser-known aspect of the artist's oeuvre, proving his mastery extended beyond renowned portraits of Viennese society to evocative depictions of nature. Over a period of many years, Klimt regularly stayed in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, occasionally travelling across the border to Italy. During the summer, he tried to capture the beauty of nature, taking advantage of the light and brilliant colours found in the mountainous countryside. Many of these paintings are now considered his finest works.
