In 1998 at the Museum der Bildenden Kunste in Leipzig an exhibition was held with the title German Painting of the Twentieth Century A Private Collectors View . This impressive exhibition featured a whole variety of artists from Otto Dix and Max Beckmann, to Gabriele Munter and Karl Horst Hodicke. It soon became apparent that such a noteworthy and remarkable display required a more permanent base through which it could be viewed. The collector and patron, Dr Alfred Gunzenhauser, chose the former Sparkasse bank building in Chemnitz, now the Museum Gunzenhauser, within which the collection can be seen to this day.
