Renoir is arguably one of the greatest artists tha the cinema has ever known, simply because he was able to work effectively in virtually all genres without sacrificing his individuality or bowing to public or commercial conventions. Renoir's films relect a sense of fluidity and spontaneity, which are the result of his choreographed staging and masterful camera work. Grand Illusion (1937) won the New York Film Critics Award for Best Foreign Film. In 1975 Jean Renoir was recognised with a special Academy Award for his genius as a filmmaker.
