My dissertation topic is concerned about the essence of African American students' experiences an urban community college. Since my arrival in the United States, and as I assumed my career in different community college settings, I became interested in the plight of minority students and, specifically, the experiences of African-American students. My grandmother was my source of inspiration for the topic of my study as well. As a woman of African origin, she taught me, when I was five or six years old, that persons of different complexion could be smart, wise, warm, caring, unselfish, kind and generous. Throughout my life journey, my grandmother continued to be my shinning light and as I became engaged in working with African American students throughout my professional journey, I wrote my dissertation about their experiences and honor their challenges, celebration, and achievements.
