Il "Book of Miracles", ritrovato alcuni anni fa e di recente acquisito da un collezionista privato americano, è una delle scoperte più spettacolari nel campo dell'arte rinascimentale avvenute negli ultimi tempi. Il manoscritto esistente è quasi completo: creato ad Amburgo, libera città imperiale di Svevia, intorno al 1550, si compone di 169 pagine con illustrazioni di grande formato a guazzo e acquerello che rappresentano fenomeni celesti meravigliosi e a tratti inquietanti, costellazioni, conflagrazioni, inondazioni e altre catastrofi e manifestazioni di varia natura. Le illustrazioni spaziano dalla creazione del mondo e altri accadimenti tratti dal Vecchio Testamento, da antiche tradizioni e dalle cronache medievali fino ad eventi contemporanei all'autore del testo e arrivano, con le illustrazioni della visionaria Apocalisse di Giovanni, a rappresentare anche la futura fine del mondo. Le illustrazioni offrono una visione unica e straordinaria delle preoccupazioni e dei timori del XVI secolo, del pensiero apocalittico e delle attese escatologiche del tempo. Al contempo, la sua aspirazione enciclopedica rivela una curiosità tipica del Rinascimento tedesco, dai tratti spiccatamente scientifici, e ci consegna una vera e propria cronaca degli orrori. Questo facsimile riproduce il "Book of Miracles" nella sua interezza, rendendo accessibile a tutti gli studiosi e gli appassionati d'arte una delle opere più importanti del Rinascimento tedesco.

The authors:
Till-Holger Borchert studied art history, musicology and German Literature at the universities of Bonn and Bloomington (IN). An acknowledged expert in Early Netherlandish paintings, he has been chief curator at the Groeningemuseum in Bruges since 2002. He has also curated numerous exhibitions in the sphere of art and cultural history, including in Brussels, Maastricht, Rotterdam, Madrid and New York. Borchert teaches art history at the universities of Aachen and Memphis (TN) and heads the Flemish Research Centre for the Arts in the Burgundian Netherlands.
Joshua P. Waterman studied art history and literature at Princeton University, where he received a Ph.D. for his dissertation on the correlation between literature and painting of the Silesian Baroque period of Silesia. The proven expert for German Renaissance art works at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and was an Andrew Mellon Fellow at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Joshua P. Waterman has collaborated on several international exhibitions, including in New York, Philadelphia, Cologne and Bruges.
