August Macke, der rheinländische »Malerpoet« unter den Expressionisten, widmete sein kurzes Leben schon früh der Kunst. Er bewunderte Arnold Böcklin, begeisterte sich für die Impressionisten und nahm Unterricht bei Lovis Corinth. Zudem prägten ihn die dekorative Arbeit für das Düsseldorfer Theater, später Franz Marc und Wassily Kandinsky mit dem »Blauen Reiter«. Mit Paul Klee unternahm er die berühmte Tunisreise und malte leuchtende, farbenfrohe Bilder. Die Monografie schildert Mackes Leben und Werk, das der Erste Weltkrieg 1914 jäh beendete.
