The history of the Swiss Alpine Club and the alpinists' first mountain huts go hand in hand - both first appearing in 1863. In 2013, 150 years later 'The Huts of the Swiss Alpine Club' has been published as a celebration of these icons of the Swiss mountain landscape. The huts now belong to the cultural heritage of the Swiss Alps and the mountains would seem incomplete without them. Today there are 152 SAC huts and they can be found high up on the Matterhorn or above the Glacier d'Otemma while others are lower down the mountains in green, grassy areas - each one has its own history. Nowadays they are used by alpinists, mountaineers, skiers and families. 'The Huts of the Swiss Alpine Club' celebrates the huts' diverse architecture and jaw dropping locations. This lavish book is a glossy, photographic record of these buildings. Background information is given for each and is accompanied by inspiring mountain photography. In addition the authors have provided an overview map, a short history, and appendices giving operational details of each hut and statistics and graphs.

L'autore:
Marco Volken, geboren 1965, ist Fotograf und Journalist. Zu seinen Interessen gehört die Alpinismusgeschichte der Schweiz. Daneben verfasst er Wander-, Skitouren- und Kletterführer. Im AS Verlag hat er an mehreren Bergmonografien mitgewirkt. Remo Kundert, geboren 1965, arbeitet als Fotograf und Journalist. Als Inhaber der Trekkingagentur 'per pedes bergferien' kennt er die Schweizer Alpen in- und auswendig. Er hat zahlreiche Wanderführer verfasst und war Mitglied der Hüttenkommission des SAC. Die beiden Autoren sind seit 15 Jahren für den offiziellen Hüttenführer des SAC zuständig.

Neuware - 1863 wurde der Schweizer Alpen-Club in Olten gegründet - und baute bereits in seinem ersten Jahr eine alpine Unterkunft, die Grünhornhütte am Glarner Tödi. Im Laufe der Zeit kamen zahlreiche weitere Hütten hinzu. Sie dienten anfänglich der geografischen und naturkundlichen Erforschung des Gebirges sowie dem Alpinismus, später auch dem aufkommenden Bergwandern und Skifahren. Längst gehören sie zum kulturellen Erbe des Alpenraums: Ohne SAC-Hütten wären die Schweizer Berge nicht mehr denkbar. Grund genug, im SAC-Jubiläumsjahr 2013 sämtliche 152 Hütten grosszügig vorzustellen. Dass jede Hütte ihre eigene Geschichte aufweist, lässt sich gut an ihrer Erscheinung, Architektur und Einbettung in die Landschaft ablesen. Das Spektrum reicht von der familienfreundlichen Hütte in grüner Umgebung bis zum spartanisch eingerichteten Biwak am Felsgrat, vom verzierten, traditionellen Steinbau bis zum minimalistischen, metallverkleideten Holzbau, vom unbewarteten Kabäuschen mit Plumpsklo bis zum High-Tech-Gebäude mit ferngesteuerter Heiztechnik. Um diese Hütten zu erreichen, benötigt man mal zwei Minuten, mal zwei Stunden und mal zwei volle Tage. Und: Jede Hütte steht in einer einzigartigen Umgebung - ob weit oben am Matterhorn oder auf dem Passo di Cristallina, im hintersten Val Roseg oder hoch über dem Glacier d'Otemma.
