Eine Ikone der Bildgeschichte: Das berühmte Foto der Flaggenhissung im Mai 1945 auf dem Berliner Reichstag symbolisiert wie kein anderes das Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges, das Ende Hitler-Deutschlands und damit das Ende des deutschen Faschismus. Das Foto wurde von einem russischen Kriegskorrespondenten der Roten Armee, Jewgeni Chaldej, am 2. Mai 1945 aufgenommen. Ein Blick in sowjetische und russische Dokumente zeigt, dass es nicht das einzige Foto der Flaggenhissung war. Doch das von Jewgeni Chaldej hat sich als das perfekteste und meist veröffentlichte in der Nachkriegsgeschichte durchgesetzt, es ist fest im kollektiven Bewusstsein verankert. Doch je häufiger das Motiv publiziert und je öfter es weltweit in Schulbüchern, Zeitschriften und im Fernsehen veröffentlicht wurde, desto vielfältiger sind die Fragen, die an dieses Motiv gestellt werden. Wie entstand dieses Bild? Wer sind die handelnden Personen? Wie wurde es zum Symbol für Generationen? Zeit, dieses historische Bild näher zu analysieren, die vielen Varianten des Motivs zu präsentieren und einen Blick auf einige bis heute aktuelle Reproduktionen zu werfen.

Ernst Volland (*1946 in Bürgstadt/Miltenberg am Main) absolvierte ein Studium der Bildenden Kunst in Hamburg und Berlin. Neben zahlreichen Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland, unter anderem in Berlin, Florenz, Lissabon, Athen, ist er als Ausstellungskurator und Herausgeber einer Reihe von Bücher zum Thema Fotografie tätig. Seit 1968 lebt er in Berlin.
