For tenor saxophone.About the Compositions - Trouble In The Monkey House: is an up tempo swing number based on a chord progression known as rhythm changes. The piece is in the style of the Bebop and Hardbop compositions of musicians like Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins. As in all pieces with swing phrasing, the off-beats are tongued and tied over to the notes that fall on the beat. - Chestnut Moods: an autumn ballad, is composed in the style of Duke Ellington. It's important to play the piece with areal Ellington type sound, very colorful and expressive. As in every ballad, the melody can be rhythmically varied and ornamented. The phrasing should be very flexible, especially in the improvisational variation where slurred and tongued passages alternate with each other. - The Smell Of Summer Rain: is a Bossa Nova of the type composed by Antonio C. Jobim and performed extensively by Stan Getz. The sound and phrasing should be smooth yet distinct and every note should be tongued separately. - Some Birds Can Sing The Blues: is a Bebop-Blues in the style of Charlie Parker, whose nickname was Bird. Several typical Charlie Parker phrases turn up in the improvisational section and the variation on the blues form in the last chorus (the chromatically descending minor chords) was used frequently by Charlie Parker. - Moules Au Muscadet: that's mussels in white wine, Muscadet being the name of the excellent white wine from the Bretagne region in France. This composition takes after Thelonius Monk and you'll find several echoes of Monk in the variation, i.e. the rhythmic displacement at the beginning, the whole tone scale in the middle and the straight eighths at the end. It is especially important to pay attention to the phrasing markings. - A Shorter Journey To The Stars: is a composition in the style of tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Shorter has written many pieces in 3/4 time and the colorful chromatic use of harmony, often outside the basic key, is typical for his style. Turning pages won't be a problem if you continue playing with just your left hand (it's possible at this point) and turn pages with your right. - Aretusa: was, according to myth, a beautiful virgin who transformed herself into a fountain while fleeing from Zeus. This """"Fontana di Aretusa"""" can be found in the Sizilian city of Siracusa, a beautiful spot with aging trees and a blue Mediterranean sky. It pays to give special attention to the phrasing markings in the middle section of the melody. - Gordon's Corner: is another blues, this time in the style of tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon. This piece should be played with a strong, """"earthy"""" sound and if possible, play the improvisational variation a little bit behind the beat.
