The first part of the paper presents the international legal framework and the evolution of responsibility for cultural heritage. The paper presents the main forensic methods and techniques used to investigate counterfeiting offenses in general and paintings in particular. The forensic means of detecting forgeries in the field of works of art are based on comparative analysis (artistic, historical and stratigraphic) and physical-chemical and biological analyzes.The specialized methods, procedures and operative means, involved in the scientific investigation of the objects and patrimony goods, are differentiated according to the category of materials and elements subject to authentication.The second part of the paper is dedicated to the knowledge of the toxicity of other pigments used in painting and the medical characterization of the action on the human body and the pathological consequences it causes. The most affected organs of heavy metal poisoning are: central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, gastrointestinal, hematopoietic, renal and cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal and reproductive system.Finally, two case studies.
