The Chinese Library Series is a collection of graded readers for overseas kids who are studying Chinese. It consists of six levels for students to choose based on their own Chinese proficiency. A free CD-ROM included narrates the story, the passage for extended reading and the wordlist in the book. ***This volume tells a story about the Monkey King and his master Monk Tang, who went to the West together to fetch Buddhist scriptures. ***Introduction: Journey to the West Journey to the West is a famous classical Chinese novel written more than 400 years ago by Wu Cheng en. ***The novel is based on the true story of a Chinese monk Xuanzang, who travelled to India on foot to seek Buddhist scriptures. In this novel, the monk s name was Monk Tang, who experienced 81 challenges during his journey. However, Monk Tang was able to overcome the difficulties with help from his disciples the Monkey King, Pigsy and Sandy. According to the legend, the Monkey King learned Kung Fu and magic from a Taoist master. Smart and powerful, the Monkey King was always ready to fight with demons and even the gods on occasion.

Carol Chen is currently a Chinese teacher at West Island School, a part of the English Schools Foundation in Hong Kong. Ms. Chen holds a master s degree in Chinese Language Education and has been teaching Chinese for many years in international schools in Hong Kong. She participated in the writing of several textbooks of Chinese as a foreign language, including a GCSE Chinese textbook sponsored by the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong. Her publications include A+ Chinese and other textbooks.
