A borderline area is a stretch of land which divides regions of a certain civilization. As a rule, such an area cuts apart different civilizations, political, and hence, cultural entities, oftentimes also religious. However, it may happen that a borderline area, despite the popular understanding of the term, is of a uniting, rather than dividing character and, as a result, it may offer an unique amalgam of various forms of culture, which seems to constitute an entity in its own right. This may happen when different civilizations and cultures live in mutual respect and understanding, allowing one another to retain their uniqueness.
