Sexton is especially critical of the "happily ever after" endings to these tales. Deconstructed into vivid, visceral, and often hilarious poems, these fairy tales reflect themes that have long fascinated the author: the claustrophobic anxiety of domestic life and the limited role of women in society.

Anne Sexton (Norton, 1928-Boston, 1974). Pasó la mayor parte de su vida en los alrededores de Boston. Vivió en San Francisco y Baltimore. En 1945, estudió en un colegio-pensión, la Rogers Hall School, en Lowell (Massachusetts). Se casó en 1948 con Alfred Muller Sexton II, conocido por el seudónimo «Kayo». Vivieron juntos hasta su divorcio en 1973, y tuvieron dos hijas, Linda Gray Sexton (1953), que más tarde se haría novelista, y Joyce Sexton (1955). Sexton convirtió la experiencia de ser mujer en el tema central de su poesía, y es la figura moderna del poeta confesionalista. Ganó el Pulitzer.
