From initial anxieties about the Cinematographe in the 1890s, to the rapid growth of the film business to become the world's leading form of entertainment by the First World War, all was fair game for satire. Here we find tone-deaf cinema pianists, moviemad children, and lovers embracing in darkened picture palaces, as well as hypocritical censors, faked war films, and caricatures of early film stars such as Max Linder and Mary Pickford.
This is the first time a large selection of such cartoons from many different countries has been reprinted, and they provide a unique insight into contemporary reaction to the birth of the movies. Reproduced in colour and black and white with brief introductions, the cartoons are by artists including Heath Robinson, Rube Goldberg, Heinrich Zille, Henriot, Storm Petersen, H. M. Bateman, and many others.
