Speaking with a nonnative accent has substantial consequences for interaction. This book reports on a study of the evaluation of nonnative speakers of Dutch by native Dutch listeners.
Evaluations of nonnative speakers from Turkey, Morocco, Surinam, the Antilles, Germany, and England were found to be based on stereotypic views on the nonnative groups from which the speakers originated, especially on the social distance respondents felt between the particular group and themselves. In addition, phonetic features influenced the evaluations, especially those speech features that were related to the native/nonnative distinction.
The results are expected to influence views on the role of nonnative accents in native/nonnative interaction and, consequently, in second language education.
