Hauptakzente sind hierbei Leben und Werk von zwei äußerst konträren graphischen Gestaltern - Henri Friedlaender und Paul L. Urban - die um 1933 aus Deutschland in das niederländische Exil gingen. Der Autor - selbst deutscher Emigrant und Buchkünstler - behandelt u.a. sowohl Friedlaenders künstlerischen und pädagogischen Einfluß auf sein Gastland, als die unterschiedliche Mitarbeit der beiden Graphiker an den Buchproduktionen der tonangebenden deutschsprachigen Exil-Verlage: Querido und Allert de Lange. Dieses umfangreiche und prägnante Schaffen hat das 'Gesicht' der zwei Verlage in starkem Maße mitbestimmt. 'Exil-Gestalten' enthält zusätzlich noch eine komprimierte graphische Bibliographie der von Friedlaender und Urban gestalteten Ausgaben dieser Verlagshäuser. Die reich illustrierte Studie beleuchtet ein bisher noch nicht erforschtes Teilgebiet holländischer Buchkunst der jüngsten Vergangenheit und ergänzt weitere Untersuchungen über das deutschsprachige kulturelle Exil in den Niederlanden während der Jahre 1932 - 1950.
