This book extends the efficiency literature to the case of intertemporal models. First, the authors introduce static network models which serve as building blocks for the intertemporal budgeting models and the dynamic models. Next, the authors devote two chapters to productivity measurements, which are considered as comparative static models. Intertemporal budgeting models and dynamic models are taken up subsequently. Each chapter, except the first, contains empirical applications.

`Most researchers in efficiency measurement will be familiar with the work of Rolf Färe and Shawna Grosskopf, who have done much to ensure that the development of production theory has been on a secure foundation, and that theory is linked to practical application. This admirably concise book is in a sense a summary of their work to date. The authors are to be congratulated on producing a well organized and well written book. ... We would also like to thank Dale Boisso and Kathy Hayes for gra ciously sharing their data on Illinois municipalities with us. Two of the applications are already published, namely: 'Environmental Regulation and Profitability: Applications to Swedish Pulp and Pa per Mills,' Environmental and Resource Economics 6: 23-36, 1995, (Section 2. 5) and 'Productivity and Quality Changes in Swedish Pharmacies,' International Journal of Production Economics 39: 137-144, 1995, (Section 3. 5). We are grateful to Kluwer Academic Publishers and Elsevier Science for kindly allowing us to reproduce these publications here.
