Nooit eerder zijn de meest talentvolle hedendaagse Nederlandse portretfotografen in een publicatie samengebracht, ondanks het feit dat het portret een belangrijk genre is in de hedendaagse fotokunst. Het portret gaat over identiteit.Niet alleen de identiteit van het model maar ook die van de fotograaf én die van de beschouwer. Dit boek doet recht aan de kwaliteit, de diversiteit en de internationale statuur van de Nederlandse portretfotografie. Studiofotograaf Koos Breukel, documentair fotograaf Vincent Mentzel, modefotografe Viviane Sassen en internationaal geprezen fotografen zoals Rineke Dijkstra en Anton Corbijn werkten samen met twintig anderen mee aan dit portrettenproject. Aan de hand van interviews wordt een beeld geschetst van het leven van de portretfotografen, hun werkwijze en visie op het portret. Portretten van onder andere Koning Willem Alexander, Koningin Maxima, Lucian Freud, Janine Janssen en Olcay Gulsen illustreren de tekst.
De rol en de betekenis van het portret verschuift. Was het traditionele portret gekoppeld aan een opdrachtgever, tegenwoordig ontstaat een portret eveneens vanuit het concept van de kunstenaar.
