His first book, Eagle Days, was published in 1973, followed by Wankie (now Hwange) Birds (1974), Birds of Prey of Southern Africa (1982), A Delight of Owls (1984), Hunters of the African Sky (1990), Birds of Southern Africa (1991) and Nesting Birds (1996), a definitive study of the breeding habits of southern African birds. Over a period of 50 years, he has contributed numerous scientific papers and popular articles to a variety of journals. As a popular speaker, he has frequently imparted his enjoyment of the natural world to audiences over the years.
