Riassunto: Medical and other missionaries worked with the Anuak and Nuer tribes in the deep bush country near Gambela, Ethiopia. They were there to teach the word of God and improve the quality of life for two primitive tribes.
At the Pokwo Mission station, two physicians and a volunteer nurse operated a hospital and performed public health, an agriculturalist taught methods to grow more nutriitious food for an improved diet, a teacher operated a six room school and a minister created the written Anuak language and the first Anuak book. Volunteers performed maintenance and construction on the mission compound.
This was a very dangerous place and living conditions were horrible by western civilization standards. But the missionaries were so devoted to their wok that they faithfully tolerated the danger and living conditions.
The story of the mission work is told through the eyes of one volunteer who spend eight months with them.
The life-styles of the two native tribes, the Anuaks and Nuers is described.
Some basis for ongoing ethnic turmoil in that region of the world is developed.
