However, the town also has an interesting history, ably related in this nicely illustrated history. After tracing the historic association of the Maori people to the district, Kingsley-Smith follows the European influence there, beginning in the 1830s when the first misionaries visited the area, travelling up the Waihou River from Thames. The river was the main transport artery to the settlement and district, before the arrival of rail and adequate roading. Like many early New Zealand settlements, Te Aroha experienced the goldfields impact, with prospecting and mining beginning in early 1880, but by the the turn of the century the 'rush' was over and subsequent revivals were short-lived. The author follows developments covering community and civic aspects as well as those of business and commerce, education, cultural, recreational and religious organizations and prominant personalities.
