Elephant folio. STUNNING rebacked French antiqued full calf. ( All the maps have been excised as well as the title page). There has been some repair to the boards which have been expertly repaired. Gilt design to the boards. The most impressive design is a magnificent gilt oval in the center of the boards. Six raised bands with gilt title and beautiful decorative design in gilt to the panels. Highly decorative gilt design to the edges of the boards. (The edges of the boards are 1/2 " thick). Original pastedowns and endpapers. The pages are made of heavy woven paper. The detailed narrative and explanations of the maps are still intact. They make for fascinating reading regarding the history and geography of many parts of the world during the 18th century. There were three editions of this title published. 1715, 1739, 1745. I cannot find the date for this copy. Louis Renard published the 1715 edition. R and J. Ottens published the other two editions.
