About the Author: Tommie S. Hata received his B.A. in Biology and Secondary Education from Washington University in Saint Louis and his M.A. in Biotechnology from Columbia University. He taught at The Pingry School in Martinsville, New Jersey from 2002 to 2010. He started and developed the curriculum for the course "Introduction to Science Research" at Pingry to provide students the opportunity to develop a working understanding of the concepts and methods fundamental to a molecular biology research laboratory. Through lab practicals and discussions, the course explores both biotechnology methods and the importance of biotechnology in various industries. The course has motivated students to pursue science-related careers in many fields including science, business, and law. He continues to develop curricula and course material focused on making current topics in science research accessible and helping students better understand the role of science research in our society and lives.
