Riassunto: This title tells you about A.A. cofounder Dr. Bob s excellent training in the Good Book as a youngster. It presents an in-depth exploration of the training Dr. Bob received during his boyhood years in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. You will see, from its documented details, that young Bob s major Christian training the training translated into the early A.A. spiritual recovery program in Akron came from his parents, Walter P. and Susan H. Smith; North Congregational Church, St. Johnsbury; the Christian Endeavor Society of that church; and the rigorous requirements and studies at the famous St. Johnsbury Academy. The authors traveled to St. Johnsbury; visited principal buildings existing during Bob s youth; interviewed the North Church pastor, the St. Johnsbury Academy archivist and the librarian, people at his boyhood home, and others. Then began their intensive research of the actual records, background books, photos, and communications. The bibliography will help readers to do likewise if they choose. More importantly, this title is a companion to a second volume comprising 20 resource binders and to a large number of books in the newly- founded Dr. Bob Core Library at North Congregational Church, St. Johnsbury, which houses extensive historical, biographical, educational, Christian, and other books, manuscripts, and photographs.
About the Author: Dick B. writes books on the spiritual roots of Alcoholics Anonymous. They show how the basic and highly successful biblical ideas used by early AAs can be valuable tools for success in today's A.A. His research can also help the religious and recovery communities work more effectively with alcoholics, addicts, and others involved in Twelve Step programs. The author is an active, recovered member of A.A.; a retired attorney; and a Bible student. He has sponsored more than one hundred men in their recovery from alcoholism. Consistent with A.A.'s traditions of anonymity, he uses the pseudonym Dick B. He has had thirty-one titles published including: Dr. Bob and His Library; Anne Smith's Journal, 1933-1939; The Oxford Group & Alcoholics Anonymous; The Akron Genesis of Alcoholics Anonymous; The Books Early AAs Read for Spiritual Growth; New Light on Alcoholism: God, Sam Shoemaker, and A.A.; Courage to Change (with Bill Pittman); Cured: Proven Help for Alcoholics and Addicts; The Good Book and The Big Book: A.A.'s Roots in the Bible; That Amazing Grace: The Role of Clarence and Grace S. in Alcoholics Anonymous; Good Morning!: Quiet Time, Morning Watch, Meditation, and Early A.A.; Turning Point: A History of Early A.A.'s Spiritual Roots and Successes, Hope!: The Story of Geraldine D., Alina Lodge & Recovery; Utilizing Early A.A.'s Spiritual Roots for Recovery Today; The Golden Text of A.A.; By the Power of God; God and Alcoholism; Making Known the Biblical History of A.A.; Why Early A.A. Succeeded; Comments of Dick B. at The First Nationwide A.A. History Conference; Henrietta Seiberling: Ohio s Lady with a Cause; and The James Club. The books have been the subject of newspaper articles and reviews in Library Journal, Bookstore Journal, The Living Church, Faith at Work, Sober Times, Episcopal Life, Recovery News, Ohioana Quarterly, The PHOENIX, and The Saint Louis University Theology Digest. They are listed in the biographies of major addiction center, religion, and religious history sites. He has published over 170 articles on his subject, most posted on the internet. Dick is the father of two sons (Ken and Don) and has two grand-daughters. As a young man, he did a stint as a newspaper reporter. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he received his A.A. degree with Honorable Mention, majored in economics, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his Junior year. In the United States Army, he was an Information-Education Specialist. He received his A.B. and J.D. degrees from Stanford University, and was Case Editor of the Stanford Law Review. Dick became interested in Bible study in his childhood Sunday School and was much inspired by his mother's almost daily study of Scripture. He joined, and was president of, a Community Church affiliated with the United Church of Christ. By 1972, he was studying the origins of the Bible and began traveling abroad in pursuit of that subject. In 1979, he became much involved in a Biblical research, teaching, and fellowship ministry. In his community life, he was president of a merchants' council, Chamber of Commerce, church retirement center, and homeowners' association. He served on a public district board and has held offices in a service club. In 1986, he was felled by alcoholism, gave up his law practice, and began recovery as a member of the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. He has been cured, and never once relapsed. In 1990, his interest in A.A.'s Biblical/Christian roots was sparked by his attendance at A.A.'s International Convention in Seattle. He has traveled widely; researched at archives, and at public and seminary libraries; interviewed scholars, historians, clergy, A.A. old-timers and survivors; and participated in programs and conferences on A.A.'s roots.
