Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: King Henry VIII was one of the most intelligent and widely read monarchs of the renaissance. From surviving catalogues, which tell us what books he had, it is clear he was deeply involved in theological debate and monastic history, especially when moving to the break with Rome. At the same time, he was a Humanist scholar ahead of his time in all the liberal arts, especially music and poetry. Equally, most of his wives were also avid readers who collected a variety of books. In this important new work, leading scholar James P. Carley describes Henry VIII's books and their significance for a deeper understanding of this seemingly familiar monarch and his wives. The extensive illustrations allow us to examine the binding and content of the collection, as well as providing some examples of marginalia in Henry's own hand. Codice inventario libreria

Descrizione libro British Library, London, first edition, 2004, 2004. Cloth, 8vo, 25 cm, 161 pp, colour ills. From the blurb: ". Henry VIII was . one of the most intelligent and widely read monarchs of the Renaissance. With typical verve and gusto, he acquired a vast quantity of books in the wake of the destruction of the monasteries and with them filled the shelves of his many palace libraries. Surviving inventories show that his collections reflected concerns with burning questions of the day, and the books that have come down to us indicate that Henry did indeed read them, think about them and even assimilate them in his own original compositions. What is less well known is that most of Henry's wives were also readers and book owners: their books mirror their religious orientations and intellectual concerns or, in one case, decorative interests. The surviving books that can be associated with the queens thus give us fascinating new insights into their personalities. In this important new book, James P. Carley, a leading scholar in the emerging field of book history, describes Henry VIII's libraries and shows their key rôle in providing a more intimate understanding of this seemingly familiar monarch and his consorts. The books of the wives, moreover, show them to have been as independent and innovative as the king himself. The extensive illustrations allow us to examine both the bindings and the contents of the collection, and also provide us with examples of his immediate voice in the form of the marginalia that he inserted into his books. Although the wives were more respectful of the physical integrity of their books, their choice of reading matter is, nevertheless, revealing. The Books of King Henry VIII and his Wives is a major contribution to the study of Tudor intellectual life as well as of the history of the book." Near Fine in Near Fine dustwrapper. Descrizione libro Bodleian Library, Oxford, 2003. Hardcover. Condizione libro: New. 156 pages. Hardcover with dustjacket. New book. BIOGRAPHY. Byronic adventurer, dandy, and prolific novelist, Benjamin Disraeli was a complex and controversial political figure who finally ascended the "Greasy Pole" to become Conservative Prime Minister in 1868 and again in 1874. Six essays examine central themes in Disraeli's personal and public life, as well as his diplomatic and writing careersÑfive by leading scholars and one by a former Chancellor of the Exchequer. It also includes the catalog from the 2003-2004 exhibition at the Bodleian Library, which focused on some of the key stepping stones in Disraeli's long and fascinating life, including his career as a novelist. Among the items illustrated and discussed are the "Mutilated Diary," personal and political letters, political cartoons from the John Johnson Collection of printed ephemera, images from Disraeli's "Gallery of Affection," and the fan signed by the delegates to the Congress of Berlin in 1878. 145 color plates | 7 x 9-3/4".
